    Kashgar Prefecture, with a total area of 162,000 kilometers, lies between latitude 350 to 408 north and longitude 730 to 797 east in the southern part of Xinjiang. Kashi city, a place of strategic importance in south Xinjiang, has an area of 15 square kilometers with an average elevation of 1289.5 meters. The city is located between latitude 395 to 295 north and longitude 756 to 764 east and lies 1,473 kilometers from the city of Urumqi.

 

    Located in the plain climate zone with the clear four seasons, Kashi has a long summer and a short winter. The annual mean temperature in Kashi is 11.7 , with the lowest temperature of -24.4 in January and the hottest 40.1 in July. The frost-free period averages 215 days.

 

    Kashi prefecture was called Shule in ancient times and it has a history of more than two thousand years. According to the record of the Persian Epic, Afulabuseyav, an ancient Tulan hero, established the capital of his kingdom here. In the beginning of the Han Dynasty, it belonged to the Zhuangpu Prefecture General's Office of the Hun. In the latter half of the second century B.C., after the Han Dynasty Emperor Wudi sent Zhang Qian as his special envoy to the Western Region, Kashi submitted to the authorities of the Western Han Dynasty. During the first century, Kashi was the supreme headquarters of Ban Chao, an imperial general who administered the Western Region. But at the end of the Sui Dynasty and in early Tang Dynasty, Kashi had to pay taxes and levies frequently to the Western Turkish Khanate. During the reign of the Tang Dynasty Emperor Taizong and afterwards, it was an important military stronghold of the Tang government. Kashi was one of the four important towns in Anxi at the time; thus it was made the seat of the Shule Superintendent's Office. The Karakhanid Dynasty also established its capital in Kashgar. Before Genghis Khan went on his western expedition, Kashgar was the south capital of the Western Liao Regime established by Khitans. After Khan's western expedition was over, Kashgar became the fief of the crown prince of Chagatai. During the reign of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong, Kashgar became the seat of government of the Kashgar Councilor of the Qing government.

 

 

 

National economy

 

    The industrial system dominated by petroleum, electrical power, textile, coal, construction materials, agriculture machinery manufactures and processing agriculture by products has taken a scale in the prefecture.

 

    Kashgar prefecture is an important economic region with agriculture as a principal part  and rich in natural resources. It is the largest good quality marketable cotton base of China.

 

 

    It is known as "County Of Melons and Fruits". Fig, apricot, almond, grape, walnut, pomegranate, apple, sweet melon are well known both at home and abroad. wide. 

 

    Kashgar has been long renown for “Home of Fruit” for more than 1,000 years. Many fine and rare fruits are sold widely in domestic and overseas market.

Peyziwat melon is called “Melon King” and “rare fruit in western region”thanks to its sweet taste. Munaki Grape: the sweet grape is called the fruit king in Kashgar. Raisin, grape sauce and canned grape are rare gifts and food to greet guests from remote. Pomegranate is a specialty of Kashgar and it tastes sweet. People enjoy pomegranates juice and wine very much. The nutritious fig tastes good and it is also a king of traditional Chinese medicine. It is one of the main fruits in Kashgar and boasts the function of anticancer.

 

   

    Cotton: Kashgar is the main area of commodity cotton base in XinJiang and even in China. Farmer’s income mainly depends on cotton. In 2003, the cotton sown area reached 157,00 hectares, with cotton yield of 225,000 tons.

 

    The sown area of winter wheat, corn and barley amount to 4.6 million 307,00 hectares, with total output of 1.6 million tons.

 

    Cow, sheep chicken: animal husbandry is a pillar industry of Kashgar. In 2003, the animal of livestock reached 7 million.

 

    Kashgar is the temperate continental climate zone. It features different seasons with dry climate and little rainfall. But the long sunshine time and big temperature difference are good for fruit panning and animal husbandry.

 

    Kashgar boasts rich oil, natural gas and 38 different minerals including gypsum and copper.

 

    Xinjiang textile Group Kashgar textile Co . Ltd. Imported advanced textile equipment, which costs about 300 million Yuan (US$ 36 million ). The yearly output of the textile equipment reaches 70,000 spindles.

 

    Mobile communication: communication developed very fast. There are 238,200 fixed phones and 256,200  mobile phones in Kashgar.

    Kashgar stock exchange: there are 3,838 capital accounts and 7,287 stock accounts registered in the exchange.

 

 

Nationality

    The Uyghur nationality is mainly distributed in the Uyghur Autonomous Region (Xinjiang Province). With a population of more than 8.9 million, Uyghur people speak Uyghur and have their own writing characters. The Uyghur nationality believe in Islam. Their households are characterized by flat roof with trap door on it. Within their house visitors could find parlor, bed room , handiwork and storage rooms. The exquisitely decorated niche ,carved from plaster, has rich flavor of the Uyghur nationality . The Uyghur nationality have "Roza" Festival, (vegetarian diet-breaking festival). Uyghur people are known as "the singing and dancing nationality", famous for its "Twelve Muqams" dancing performance, which is a musical epic. The Uyghur nationality attach great importance to clothing, they are always tidily dressed. All the Uyghur people wear small four-corner flower hats. The Uyghur people has the famous bridal-veil raising ceremony. Among the entertaining programs of the Uyghur Nationality Village are " Uyghur Nationality Custom Introduction", "Sing and Dancing"," Instruments Playing", and other conventional performances.

 

 

Uyghur language

    Uyghur language is a Turkic language spoken in Xinjiang ,China.

 

    The language traditionally used the Arabic script since 10th century. The government introduced a Roman script in 1969, but the Arabic script was reintroduced in 1983.
